The Legend of Borealis

Part Two:
The Elfstones

Together, the great Silven and Golden Elf Kings, ruled over their people; and for thousands of years did the elves spread afar and dwell in immortal glory, undimmed under the eternal gaze the heavens, o'er the undying lands.
So great had become their realm that the gods themselves were in awe at its splendor. Even so, the most pride was held with the sun Solaris and moon Luna, as they shone their radiant light down upon all that their children had made.

It was in this time on Gaia that the elven-kings, at the height of their mystical wonders and craft, created the Elfstones; two crystal orbs of immeasurable power and beauty.
The silven-blue Orb of the Moon, the Selenestone, was made by Lunarean and the golden Orb of the Sun, the Heliostone, was made by Solarean. Within each stone was poured the glory, light and will of each kindred. These stones were known also as the Eyes of the Kings, for it is said that  the brothers' poured into the living orbs a part of their souls at the time of the jewels' making; each stone shining with the same deep color and piecing gaze given from the ancient gleaming eyes of the fair twins.

The Elfstones became the manifested heart and highest treasure of their fair peoples; kept deep within the Realm of Borealis.
Thus dwelt the good people in light during the first age of the world, before darkness came.

Here is recited the lay of the Silver King as it is recalled by men, though I am sure that its telling would be of a longer and more cherished remembrance in the halls and dwellings of the elves:

Long ago, when the world was young
And the lives of men had not yet begun,
There dwelt a being most fair to be seen,
Of a pale guise – the Silver Elven-King.

The moon was his mother – his father the sun,
Who loved and named him, blessed Lunarean.
Eldest was he of the twins from the sky,
Crowned with deep wisdom, never to die.

Great was his strength - mighty his sword,
From his shinning helm, light unfailing poured;
But grandest of all was the creation he wrought,
The Orb of the Moon - for which wars were fought.

To his brother, the sacred Elfstones he did entrust,
For need drove him far from the city of Borealis.
But alas! Betrayed were they by their dearest friend,
The Dark King had enslaved Solarean for an evil end.

Lunarean gathered a great host of Elvendom,
Pursuing the snowy way the betrayer had run,
Following his fate into the cold realm of Astrum,
There, in deathly winter, they beheld his doom.

He fought the Dark King in high, storming gusts,
Long upon the fanged slopes of Mt. Dentatus.
Their battle was a fierce destructive tide,
Tearing down the entire mountain side.

Grave victory was given for the Heliostone,
(The orb from which the light of the sun shown)
Freeing his brother from the cursed chained band,
Beloved Solarean was slain by his twin's own hand.

There, the Silver King then fell upon the ice,
Taken by the fatal wound of his sacrifice;
Thus, into shadow fell the light of the kings,
In the land of Astrum - keeper of blackened things.

Long did the world cry out in sorrowful woe,
Shaking all the heavens from far below,
Til the flowing of blood was given avenge
By the birth and rise of the father of men.

Of course, it would not do to end now, and the night is still so young, so I shall tell you more of how darkness, death and the life of men came into the world.
