Sacrifice
Envision this if you would,
A warrior of seemingly inhuman strength using his immense power to hold back a torrent of water from its ever flowing path, this so that others may cross safely to the other side.
They have placed all trust and faith in this warrior to solely protect and lead them where they cannot go themselves. He has guided them through many dangers thus far - but he knows what they ignorantly do not; that he is not as strong as they believe him to be. They know not that he holds a demon from within that is slowly consuming him, body, mind and soul. He has managed to contain it in the past - but he is at his limit.
Everything that he has left to give - he is using to hold back the great torrent threatening to consume them all, knowing that he has no strength left to follow them to the other side. Smiling to himself - he is okay with that. For him there is no greater peace and joy then to sacrifice himself for those whom he happily serves and loves so dear.
The last footfall makes it to the other side. They beckon unto him to join them. He gives a last sigh and glances to them, with his deep twinkling gaze and sad smile.
He then closes his eyes as his strength fails him and, with outstretched arms, welcomes the torrent that moves down upon him. Like a tide of piercing arrows, the raging flow consumes and carries him away - much to the horror of the others.
Crying in the realization of his sacrifice, the others search long until they sorrowfully find his mangled and lifeless body cast upon the cold, jagged shore. Death had not claimed him fully, so they carried him into a shelter built by starlight.
They wept all night by the fire with him in their care, pleading for him to return.
His spirit declined, as they heard in their hearts:
"I have laid down my life so that you may live...to go where you can be free and happy."
They wept greater still and cried out in pain:
"We know not where we go and the way is shut unto us! The darkness is ever surrounding and we cannot see the path...but know that it leads us home."
His soul then wept with them and did return him to his flesh.
He opened his eyes and gazed at them sadly still,
"What am I to do for you, dear ones, in this wretched body and state that I am in?"
With cries of joy and tears of happiness, they each held him in their embrace.
"We care not! You are loved so much, our dearly beloved brother.
Fear not! for we all shall carry you - so that you may continue to lead us into the happiness of paradise that we seek, into the Promised Land."
